Pensioners have raised an alarm that they are “dying in droves” due to the failure of the federal government to meet their obligations and save them from financial challenges.

The pensioners, under the aegis of Association of Concerned Federal Pensioners, staged a protest in Abuja for the non-payment of their 18 months arrears of 33 per cent pension increment and erratic monthly pension payment.

They called for the sack of the Executive Secretary of Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), Sharon Ikeazor, over her inability to address their plight.

The protesting senior citizens carried placards with inscriptions: ‘Hon. Minister come to our rescue, we are dying in droves,’ and ‘Sharon Ikeazor must go’.

The pensioners said the immediate Past Acting Director-General of PTAD, Murtala Musa Oluwatoyin, paid pensioners 24 months of the arrears within six months leaving the balance of 18 months arrears.

Speaking on behalf of the pensioners, Comrade Ignatius Uzomah, said in 2010, the federal government increased pensioners and the civil service salaries by 53. 4 per cent, adding that however, that of pensioners was later reduced to 33 per cent.

He said from July 2010 to September 2014, the previous administration managed to pay only nine months of the 33 per cent increment out of the 51 months then, remaining 42 months before there was a change in government.
